it gives me a lot of pain to write a review about this place...the service is really bad...the waiter is just gonna piss you off with the way he tries to push you to order within seconds of getting seated... whether you go long before the place shuts down or even later, it doesn't matter they seem to be always in a hurry. The food is extremely spicy and it cause stomach upset the next day. Moreover once I went their for a birthday treat, I was so annoyed with their service, I didn't add tip but later on I found out that the restaurant has added a tip amount from my card. I found that really outrageous, this is simply not done. If you provide good service , people will tip you. This place sucks big time, pardon me for the language!!

I order their orange shrimp and they were out of fired rice when I asked for additional sauce for the steam rice, which I didn't order they wanted to charge me. So when I asked for the manager he said, " YOU JUST HAVE TO PAY THE RICE IS FREE SO IF YOU WANT SAUCE YOU HAVE TO PAY." I said, " Well just take the this meal off and leave the other 3." This MANAGER voided MY ENTIRE MEAL AND SNATCHED THE FOOD FROM MY CHILDREN HANDS. TALK A BOUT UPSET!!! I had to ask for another worker to speak to that corrected him and said , " I don't want to lose the whole order re do it." then said," he has worked a double so he's tired!" I work with a well known company and worked 14-16 hour days and I HAVE NEVER TREATED A CUSTOMER LIKE THIS...TO HAD INJURY TO INSULT HE THEN GOT HIS HOT PINK CELL PHONE AND VIDEO RECORDING WITHOUT MY CONSENT ( WHICH IS ILLGEAL AND MY ATTORNT WILL BE SPEAKING WITH THIS ESTABLISHMENT TODAY!!!) when I asked for a full refund I ENDED UP LEAVING WITH MY CREDIT CARD CHARGED AND WAITING TO BE REFUNDED

I ordered rice noodle soup today for lunch. It was the most disgusting soup I have ever eaten. The noodles were so overdone that they wouldn't even go on the spoon without dissolving. The beef was chewy, fattty and grissely. The only flavor to the soup was the salt. It was so salty it was thick! HORRIBLE! Then, I called and spoke with Don I believe. He said I was wrong, the soup is good and they have lots of customers. He was rude and yelled at me on the phone. Not to mention the soup was $12!!!! My co workers eat there bc it is very close to my work and they regularly complain about the food but it's close so sometimes that's the only food we have time to get. Never again though! I let several co-workers taste this "soup" and they're not going to be returning either. Mostly due to the rude phone call that I had on speaker. TERRIBLE FOOD, TERRIBLE MANAGER, TERRIBLE!

I am stunned by the rudeness of the manager, daughter of the owners. When I read other comments, like the one made by another long time customer, about the manner of rudeness experienced, I echo the same sentiment. Our office planned for a Chinese lunch. I recommended Kin Lin. I called the night before to find out what is the best way to place the order, and I was told not to fax the order because the fax machine was not working, but to call around 10:30am. I was told Thursday morning about the person who took the order was so rude. When I called in the evening to report such rude treatment and that we also found fruit flies in one of the order as well. The daughter/manager said she was aware of the call, and that it was because the person who took the order didn't understand and the reason was the order was placed by a Vietnamese. I was totally stunned by this racist remark. May be Kin Lin should have someone who can take orders to answer the phone. This daughter/manager was so defensive, nothing apologetic. Asked rudely what I want about the flies in the food. What a shame for someone who supposed to run the business. By the way, I have been customer for 20 plus years, .What a shame. And I will not recommend Kin Lin for sure and be embarrassed and mistreated again.

I've been eating here for 19 years. It's consistent, tasty, inexpensive American-Chinese. I've watched this place grow from a "hole-in-the-wall" establishment to the modestly beautiful restaurant that it is today. If you ask nicely they will serve you a traditional Chinese meal from off the menu. The staff is courteous and most of the servers are delightful; ranging from enthusiastic family members to serious long timers to kids with acerbic wit (there is one young woman that makes me laugh every time I get her), youthful enthusiasm, and a desire to please. Yes, I've had a few mix ups on to-go orders in the past (a forgotten sauce or two). However, in twenty years of eating here I'd be more freaked out if I hadn't received a mix up. Oh, hey, they are human! Whew! No extra terrestrial invasion being launched from this place! Though that would make a fun movie.

I have been coming here since around 1995 or so and have always loved it. Apparently the daughter of the owners has taken over the running of the joint. BIG MISTAKE!! I was a student at UMKC and I have now worked here for 15 years. The daughter was recently married and her husband is great! He is always calm, polite and takes his time to make sure everything is ok with your order. Great guy. The daughter, on the other hand, obviously doesn't like her job. She is rude and cheap. Today I called and said, "I would like a carry-out". And she said, "ok, is that all"? I said, "well, i'd like some food with it". She said, "oh.... yes... what would you like"?? Upon picking up my order I asked for a couple chili sauces for my meal, she only added one. I asked for another and she said, "it's very expensive". WTF I just spent $10 on dumplings and soup for lunch!! I also tipped her a dollar on carry-out! I should mention again I have been coming here regularly for 20 years! The mom and dad are great people I miss seeing them behind the counter as they are there less and less. THE DAUGHTER NEEDS TO GO!!! She will ruin this place if she takes over for good. Never smiles, always rude and she hates her job. Mom and dad need to get her out of there before it's too late. They have spent too many years building up this awesome place just to have her mess it up!!!!

Out of the very many Chinese restaurants out there, my preference is for this one. However, the service is less than stellar. When getting a to-go order, they almost never include eating utensils. It's unnerving especially when you're ready to eat. My sister also had said that one of the cashiers were rude. I think the language barrier sometimes is perceived as being rude. Giving the benefit of the doubt. The food is good. They still use egg in their fried rice, which I like. Most other places refuse to or will charge extra for egg.

I love this place. Perhaps it's nostalgia, as I have worked or attended school at UMKC since 2000. The menu, particularly lunch menu, is primarily Americanized, but the authentic dishes really shine. I love the spicy tofu, the ma po tofu, the noodle soups with rice noodles, the pickled vegetables, green beans with tofu, and the baby bok choy with mushrooms. For vegetarians, note that there are two distinct types of tofu here, one being spongy and white like you're used to, but the other far denser, richer, and almost meat like. It's pretty incredible. It's incredibly affordable to eat here. You can get a larger, more "premium" entree and a drink for ten bucks or less. They deliver at least as far as 36th St., where I live. There's a server here named David that appears to remember the names and back stories of every single customer he has. It's pretty astounding and gives the place a cool, friendly vibe that didn't exist years ago.Part of the hole in the wall charm is gone since they renovated the inside of this place and absorbed the building next door, but many will also find the newer, cleaner decor more welcoming.

I have been going to Kin Lin for about a year now. I have very dear friends that go there several times a week and have been going there for over 15 years. The owners of the restaurant work 15-16 hour days...literally. They have given their heart and soul to the restaurant which is demonstrated by the excellent and fresh food. All of the food is purchased fresh daily. It is prepared with great care and concern. I don't live in Kansas City but while visiting I eat there at least two-three times a month. The food has always been consistent. Knowing what good chinese food tastes like, I now found it hard to eat Chinese anywhere else. This food is by far above and beyond any other Chinese food I have ever eaten. I enjoy the way the vegetables and tofu is prepared. I normally am a very picky midwest eater but the way this food is prepared allows me to experiment. Kin Lin is also different than other Chinese restaurants because it is very clean. I do not find the typical greasy table and salt or soy shakers here. It is very clean and I highly recommend this restaurant. I just have to say to the others who posted very negative things, I'm not sure they were at the same restaurant.

This pains me to write this, as we have been Kin Lin customers for years. We always order the same thing and it's usually consistent. Last Friday evening I was eating at Kin Lin, ordered the chicken and vegetables, ate about 1/3 of it and it was great. I then ate a piece of broccoli and immediately knew something was wrong. I had a horrible chemical taste in my mouth (similar to accidentally getting bug spray in your mouth but way more intense). I had to spit it out in my napkin. I didn't want to overreact and began to wonder if it really was a chemical or just a bad piece of broccoli but when i ate a few more bites, I got the same horrible taste. Like I said, I frequent this place so I didn't want to raise a huge stink in front of the whole restaurant so when I told the server, she just kind of looked at me like she didn't really understand said something like "Ah, that's too bad", took my credit card and walked away. I attempted to call the manager and was totally ignored. This is or could be a serious issue. I imagine I wasn't the only one this happened to.I am sure it was accidental (albeit very careless) but I am alarmed at their lack of caring! The chemical or whatever I ate burned my mouth in a way, it stuck with me all weekend- all weekend. Thank goodness I didn't swallow the food and felt fine besides the weird bad taste in my mouth. Sad to say we're not going back to Kin Lin!

The lady on the phone is very rude. She's short, never friendly, and never gives an estimated time. The delivery driver (who is oddly Latino) randomly showed up to my old apartment one night when I wasn't home and creeped out my roommate. Neither one of us had ordered any food that night. I stopped ordering for a few years in the hopes he would get fired or quit. Sadly, no luck. Now when I do order, my food takes more than an hour to get to my new apartment (I live in midtown) and my order is never correct. Creepy dude noticed I moved and even commented on it. When I told him it bothered me that he showed up uninvited to my home and that's why I had not ordered in a while, he laughed it off as if I were joking. He's lucky we didn't call the cops that night. My order is usually simple as I am a creature of habbit, but either the drinks aren't diet or the rice had nuts and/or shrimp in it when I ask to exclude them. While I'm not allergic to either shrimp or cashews, if someone else is, kin Lin WILL KILL YOU

I just came from Kin Lin.Today was the first time I tried it. Such TERRIBLE service. The female server asked if we needed more time then she never came back. Each time we tried to ask her a question after that she was rude to us. A Middle Eastern male server noticed we were waiting to have our order taken. He came over to take our order. I ordered Chicken With Vegetables. The man said there were better dishes with the same price. He said "Why don't you try our Chicken With Black Bean and if you don't like it I'll bring you the Chicken With Vegetables." I reluctantly agreed. He brought the dish. It was too spicy. He seemed annoyed that I didn't like it. He took it back to the kitchen and returned with the same dish that had been recooked. It still had too much spice. Again he was annoyed. Finally he brought me what I had originally ordered. I also asked him if they had a diet caffiene free drink. He said they had diet Pepsi but nothing without caffiene. My husband and I had to wait forever to get my soda and his silverware. The male server finallly brought me what he said was a "sugar-free" Sierra Mist. It was not sugar-free. It was caffiene free. As we were leaving the woman at the counter asked how everything was. When I explained what had happened she wanted to argue with me. She told me all their black bean sauce was spicy. I tried to tell her I hadn't tried to order it in the first place. I also explained the diet soda issue. She said they had no diet soda. I told her they had diet Dr. Pepper right next to her in the cooler. She acted surprised and annoyed. While I was explaining to her what happened the male server walked over and tried to give us a coupon card that needs a stamp each time you come back. After listening to what I was saying to the woman he started saying how he had cooked a new dish for me. After not getting what I ordered to drink or eat, the rude treatment and not being able to eat my meal with my husband, I handed the coupon card back to the woman and promptly walked out. I will not be back.
